Your host, Mark, is a qualified social worker, who has been working with children and families across Wales and England for the last ten years. In 2011, Mark qualified from Swansea Metropolitan University with a 2:1 in Counselling and Psychology, before returning to education and completing a MSc in Social Work in 2016. Through his work and education, Mark has worked with over 500 families, undertaking detailed interviews to understand the background, dynamics and functioning of the people he has supported through his work. He has engaged in further education to enhance his interviewing techniques, showing particular interest in understanding the narrative life journey of children and their families. Mark has a great appreciation for the power of these stories, as they can tell us about ourselves, where we have come from, and they can be central to the people we become.

Coming from a small family, Mark understands the importance of the sharing of stories and the influence that his immediate family members and their experiences have had on his own journey, as well as the fascinating tales of some distant relatives that he would never have had the chance to meet. Following the loss of his grandmother in 2011 and then his grandfather in 2018, Mark has reflected on the loss of some of their wonderful stories as there is no enduring record of their voice.

Mark has created Legacy Podcasts to help you to preserve your story for future generations and believes that his experience as an interviewer could help you to create an enduring “time capsule,” which can be enjoyed by close friends and family, including future generations in the near and distant future.

“I wish that I had the gift of being able to listen to a conversation with my grandfather or my grandmother again, to listen to their stories and to hear them laugh. Those stories are now lost to time, but I want to give others this gift to enjoy in years to come.”
